Your pet's specific needs will vary based on age, activity, breed, health and metabolism. All of these factors will contribute to the type and amount of food that will best maintain their optimal health. The best indication of correct feeding amounts is your pet's body condition. The recommended feeding guideline is 1-3% of ideal ADULT body weight per day, based primarily on your pet's activity level:
Special Considerations:
Digestive Health
Feeding your pets a raw diet is species-appropriate. Their bodies are meant to digest raw meat and bone. Easier digestions means that your pets are getting all of their vitamins and minerals naturally - the way mother nature intended!
Kibble is much more difficult to digest because it is completely processed. Most kibbles have grains and starches which are not natural for your pet's diet. It contains synthetic vitamins and minerals that cannot be absorbed efficiently.
Immune System Health (Including skin & coat health)
The digestive system and immune system are linked. When a dog is fed a raw diet, both systems are healthier. Together, this means that your dog will have fewer allergies and immune problems. A raw diet will also ensure a bright, shiny, and natural coat (soft or wire hair) and reduce shedding.
Do you have a pet with allergies? It is most likely linked to their diet. The immune system is fighting without a healthy digestive system. Some symptoms include: dry itchy skin, dull coat, itchy paws, poor immune function, and ear infections.
Teeth/Gums/Breath
When feeding a raw diet, you will not have to spend a dime on cleaning your pet's teeth! The natural enzymes in raw food do all the work for you. You can also feed recreational bones - these are fun treats, and will meet your pet's chew drive. Ground bone, when fed semi-frozen, also polishes teeth.
Some symptoms of an unhealthy digestive system are a foul mouth, tooth plaque, and dark gums. Kibble companies attempt to "fix" this by providing processed treats that they claim will help clean your pet's teeth. This is a marketing scam - don't buy into it!
Stool - Size and Smell
Because your pet is fed a species-appropriate diet, they will absorb all of the nutrients in their food. You will notice an approximately 60% reduction in the amount/size of stool. This means less cleanup for you, and it is also biodegradable! Because your pet no longer needs to pass undigestable items, their stool will also be less smelly (on a balanced raw diet)
When fed a kibble diet, the bulk of the food is indigestable. This means large and smelly stool, because your pet is required to pass useless ingredients out of their system. You may notice that you are feeding 4 cups per day, and cleaning up 2 cups of stool - This tells you that something isn't adding up!
